UKRAINE- In 2003 a Sister Ctiy relationship with Vinnitsa was formalized. Our ongoing medical, cultural and religous exchanges with this city has generated many volunteers and an already active membership. We also signed a Friendship agreement with Krasnodon. Birmingham and Krasnodon have been linked through the US-Ukraine Foundation Community Partnership Program for
8 years. Extensive professional exchanges are involved with this relationship. We have also received a grants to host Open World delegations from Ukraine and maintain regular people to people and informational exchanges with Vinnitsa.
-The 3rd Annual Ukraine Celebration was a big success. Over 300 people attended festivities at Crestway Baptist Church on Aug. 27, 2011.
-April 15-23, 2011 we will host our fourth Open World delegation. This program is designed to bring leaders from former Soviet Republics to America for training experiences. Birmingham will be hosting an unprecedented 4th delegation and the delegation will consist of people from our Sister City of Vinnytsia. The theme for the visit will be "Transparency in Government."
-We are planning to host Ambassador Olexander Motsyk this year in Birmingham.
-We sent a received Christmas/Holiday Cards from students at Sun Valley elementary to students in Vinnytsia.
-We were honored to host the Ukrainian Ambassador Oleh Shamshur Jan.
19-21,2008. where he announced that Scotty Colson would be the new Honorary Consul for Ukraine to Alabama. Alabama is only one of 5 states with an honorary consulate for Ukraine. We are working with the BCRI to have an exhibition on the
Holodomor (Ukrainian famine caused by Stalin's policies) next year and
also working with Ukraine 300 to establish links between their
children's health system and our Children's Hospital.
