Mission Statement
The Birmingham Sister City Commission is a non-profit citizen group dedicated to cultivating and promoting global cooperation, cultural understanding, and economic development between the people of the Birmingham metropolitan community and cities around the world.
Vision Statement
The Birmingham Sister City Commission leads the local movement as the international liaison for community involvement and volunteer action by motivating and empowering private citizens, municipal officials and business leaders to conduct long-term programs of mutual benefit.
What we value
We value cultural differences as reflected in our diverse Sister City relationships and exchanges. We value how these international partnerships expand our horizons as people and a community. We value cultural and artistic exchanges that enhance our understanding of other cultures. We value people to people and community to community exchanges that enrich us through new business opportunities, educational and enrichment projects as well our chance to share our community with the world.
Our Friendship Cities
We also recognize “Friendship Cities”. These cities are either in countries where we have existing Sister City relationships (SCI only allows one sister City per country); or recognize relationships between groups in our community and communities in other nations.
China- Chao Yang district of Beijing. Huangshi in Hubei Province (Sister Province to Alabama) Japan- Maebashi, Guatemala- Coban which is a project of the Partners for the Americas program.
